A 20-year-old Mhondoro man has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for vandalising and stealing copper cables from Zimbabwe Electricity Supply Authority (ZESA) infrastructure.
Delvin Majuta of Mugwagwa Village under Chief Murambwa in Mamina, Mhondoro, was sentenced by the Kadoma Magistrates’ Court after being convicted of vandalising and stealing electricity infrastructure.
According to the National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe (NPAZ), Majuta and an accomplice, who is still at large, targeted the ZINWA Irrigation Scheme Pump House B in Mamina on August 26, 2026.
The court heard that the pair entered the pump house at around 2.30am armed with hacksaws, a hammer, metal blades and spanners.
They allegedly cut copper cables from a ZESA transformer, stripped the insulation and packed the recovered copper into two sacks.
The theft was discovered by security guards conducting perimeter checks, who followed footprints leading to Chidzenga Bus Stop.
The guards reportedly found the suspects waiting for transport, but the pair fled when approached, abandoning the stolen cables.
Police subsequently launched investigations which led to Majuta’s arrest at his homestead.
The recovered copper cables weighed 37.6 kilogrammes and were valued at US$740.
