Zimbabwe Human Rights Commission (ZHRC) commissioner Dr Eng. Martin Muduva and his wife have died following a suspected violent domestic dispute in Harare.

Muduva died on Wednesday morning at Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals, where he had been receiving treatment after sustaining injuries in the incident.

His wife died at the same hospital on Tuesday night.

Sources close to the investigation said the incident occurred on Tuesday night, with Muduva reportedly being struck twice with an axe during the altercation.

The couple was subsequently rushed to Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals for treatment, where they later died from their respective injuries and complications.

Police have confirmed that investigations are underway to establish the circumstances surrounding the deaths.

The ZHRC confirmed Muduva’s death in a condolence message, describing his passing and that of his wife as a devastating loss.

“It is with profound shock and deep sorrow that the Commissioners and Secretariat of the Zimbabwe Human Rights Commission (ZHRC) have learnt of the untimely passing on of Commissioner Dr. Eng. Martin Muduva and his wife,” the commission said.

Muduva was appointed a ZHRC Commissioner on December 19, 2024, and the commission said he made significant contributions to its work, particularly in linking human rights and technology.

“His commitment to public service and the promotion and protection of human rights and administrative justice will be remembered with profound respect,” the ZHRC said.
